Plant Profile – Cowboy Cactus (Euphorbia)
Looking for a striking, low-maintenance addition to your garden or indoor plant collection? The Euphorbia Trigona, also known as the Cowboy Cactus, might just be the perfect fit! With its tough look and easy-care routine, it’s ideal for those who love plants but don’t have the time or skill for constant upkeep.
Best Growing Conditions
Outdoors, the Cowboy Cactus thrives in sunny, warm spots, making it great for the warmer months. During the colder months, you’ll want to bring it indoors or keep it in a greenhouse to protect it from frost. Indoors, the Cowboy is happy in a bright, sunny window where it can soak up as much light as possible. It enjoys mild climates but needs to be sheltered from colder temperatures, which are common in the UK during winter.
Repotting the Cowboy
This isn’t a plant you’ll want to repot frequently. We recommend buying the Euphorbia Trigona at a size you’re comfortable with, as it’s best left in the same pot long-term. If you do need to repot, wear protective gloves to avoid the cactus’s spines and select a large enough pot that will allow for growth without needing to be moved again soon.
Looking After Your Cowboy Cactus
When repotting, choose a high-quality cacti and succulent compost to ensure proper drainage. Make sure your pot has drainage holes as well, as the Cowboy Cactus doesn’t like sitting in wet soil. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings to avoid root rot, which can occur if the soil stays too damp. Under the right conditions, your Cowboy Cactus can grow up to 2 metres tall, making it an impressive focal point for any room or garden.
With very little effort, this spiky character will thrive and make a bold statement in your home or garden all year round!
